Not one to write very often, as I generally lack descriptive writing. However, after pressure from various sources to actually write something in my journal here we go!
I went on Tuesday night to sort out my Driver's license, and as I have an American one (South Carolina) and to get it converted here in the United Kingdom... is basically do everything again, and I've been driving for so long that I have picked up many many bad habits... I don't fancy going through the learning process again... I was not happy, until I read online that I could switch my American for a German one, its just a hand in ... and switch!
So me, being the ... schemer I am, decide to go and try get a license in Germany... its just a switch right? Well let me tell you, what a nightmare.
I went first to a place called Simmern, which is near the airport Frankfurt-Hahn, and she tells me... yes, we do switches here, but you need a translation of your American license into German.
Great I think .. not a problem...
So I ask, where can I get it replaced (in my very bad German) and she tells me, Frankfurt.
FRANKFURT!!!! That's over 100 MILES away, but she says it must be done. So off I go to Frankfurt, and 2 hours later (and 46 Euros) I have a translation done into German. I travel back, and guess what... The office is closed from 12.00.
I'm still pretty clueless on the procedure, as I thought at this point all I need is a translation... however, I am speaking to the manager of the Intercity hotel @ Hahn airport, and she said... "You can't get your drivers license here, you aren't REGISTERED!" Registered I think, oh my goodness... "Where do I register I ask?" She considers and then says, "Where you live in Germany." Now I don't live in Germany, however, I do have through my wife, a few people I know here.. and one lives in Karlstein-am-Main.. which is near Frankfurt. "Great, go register there."
Frankfurt the next day...
-------------------------
Now I have 8.. max 9 hours to get everything sorted, so I'm on the bus at 7.30 from Hahn to Frankfurt, and I got to the station (Train station) and walked over to the tourist info, and I got told to go to a place.. about 2 KM away, and to get the underground to there.. a number 5.
Piece of advice (interjection) don't ever catch the underground in Frankfurt.
I catch the number 5.. eventually, and get off 3 stops later, and go to the police station... a lady cop is at the reception, she was REALLY helpful, and told me where to go... and even walked with me as she liked to talk English I think.
I get to the office, and explain my needs to the lady... she nods and gives me a ticket, and tells me to go the first floor.
To the first floor I go, and I sit down .. and wait about 15 minutes, till I'm called. Off I go to register.. its easy right.
"We need your address" she says. So I tell her my wife friends address, and she shakes her head and says.. "That's not part of Frankfurt.. you need to go to Offenbach (forgive if I misspelt it!)" So to Offenbach I go... and I only have five hours left, so I decide to bite the bullet and take a taxi.
(I'm not even going to get into a rant about Frankfurt taxis... lets just say they are the most expensive, and have the stupidest drivers.. anywhere I have been to in over 50 countries!)
Anyway, 12.50 euros later, I'm at the office in Offenbach... and promptly get told, "No, you need to go to Karlstein-am-Main.. and you're lucky, its open from 2 - 4 today (I get the impression its open like once a week), then Ditzenbach to register for your drivers license"
Fine, so I get a taxi *WINCE* to Karlstein-am-Main, 55 Euros later.. I arrive at the town hall, and ... unbelievably, after five minutes I'm registered.. and I was telling my story to the lady behind the desk... and she was very sympathetic.. until I told her I needed to go to Ditzenbach... she was shocked, Karlstein is in Bayern!!!!!!!!!!!
A man, who owns the local gas station (garage - petrol place) was behind me and he must have felt sorry for me as he turned and said, "Come with me.. I'll take you there, and make sure you have no more trouble.." (Now this is at 14.08 .. I have till 16.00 to get the bus back)
I can't believe my luck, for the first time something is going right.. and I get to talk to him, he drives me to the driving office.. and then.. the biggest bitch I have ever met, in my life .. anywhere in the world, was who I got to see along with a very nice helpful young man, he spoke fluent English, but she turned around and said, "This is Germany, and we speak German at this office, there will be no English conversation here.". However, I had all the pretty forms at this point... but the picture I had, was not right. I had to go get my picture done. My saviour from Total Garage stepped in again, and took me to his father.. who was a photographer.. and in ten minutes I had a proper picture.. and back I go. The bitch was very annoyed, as they close at 15.30 and I got there at 15.28. Everything was in order... then she asked, "How do I know you lived in the US more than 120 days.." I looked at her, and said . .my passport was issued in the US in 2003, and the drivers license was issued in 2005. That's over two years...
Frankly, I think she was looking for any excuse to say no to me.
However, she had to take it .. and I paid the 40 odd euros for the license... but I was told it would be at least a month, probably two before I get it..
now my hero from Karlstein, put me in the car, and drove me to the airport.. and I caught the connection shuttle to Hahn.
So in the end, I got my license sorted.. but it cost me about 300 euros.. and the hell I went through to get it, was almost not worth it.
I will say this, German officials are without a doubt the most unhelpful officious in the world, and I mean worse than corrupt Africa!
Anyway, story done....
