Winter brings the grace of the snow leopard.
Fierce plains and frozen spaces guard her!
Winds announce her smooth feline languor;
fear and wonder tell of her silken grandeur.
Way beyond the common haunts she lingers.
Grey rosettes on whiteness veil her prowl –
waking illusions, half-made dreams – lending
grave enchantments to her search for prey.
Irbis? Ounce? Her given names are legion?
Names could never conjure all her glamour;
earth can offer few such sources of legend,
naked and blazing through this frosty gloom.
Sleet and hail may clothe her silent journeys?
Sleep will burn beneath her purring jaws!
